Winston-Salem was formed in 1913 through the merging of two adjacent towns - Winston and Salem. The town of Salem was established in 1766 by Moravian settlers from Pennsylvania, becoming the center of the Moravian Church in North Carolina. Winston, named after Revolutionary War officer Joseph Winston, was incorporated in 1849 and grew rapidly due to its location on the railroad and the tobacco industry. The two towns prospered independently until the decision to merge and create Winston-Salem.
