Winnipeg was founded in 1738 by French traders who named it Fort Rouge. It later became an important trading post in the fur trade industry. In 1873, the city was named Winnipeg, derived from the nearby Lake Winnipeg. It rapidly grew during the late 19th century due to the Canadian Pacific Railway's extension to the city and the influx of settlers.
